After months of living in London, I’m finally getting my fix of sunshine! I spent part of May in the Maldives, am currently in the Caribbean, and plan on heading to Greece with girlfriends in July! In all of my travels I’ve been searching high and low, in store and online, for the best swimwear of 2018. So far high-waisted and front-tie swimsuits are definitely big trends, along with one pieces, headbands, coin necklaces, hoop earrings, and bow shoes that can be worn to the beach. I’ve rounded up the trends along with a lot of chic classics to cover all the bases of swimsuits, coverups, accessories, and footwear for summer 2018!
SWIMSUITS | DESIGNER FAVORITE: MARYSIA
Marysia is still one of my all-time favorite swimwear lines. If you’re open to investing and looking for styles with a bit more coverage, this is one of the best quality brands out there. I have the blue bandeau scalloped top and bottom for tanning, the high neck halter for more active beach days, this halter one piece for when I want a bit more coverage and just got this red v-neck style top and bottom this year for the Maldives thats a good balance of all three! I’ve linked all of the styles that I own below, along with a few other favorites that will last you several summers.
SWIMSUITS | UNDER $100
I usually wear the same quality styles year after year, but the change things up without spending a million bucks, I’ll look for swimsuits on ASOS. I found this lavender suit which looks SO good with a tan! And this frilly, blue striped style that I’ve been wearing in the Maldives and the Caribbean. I also ordered a few trendy styles from Arabella Swim to wear in Greece. The bottoms are SUUPPERR cheeky if that’s your thing and the prices are really low compared to other swim retailers. H&M, J Crew, and SHOPBOP also have additional options — some of my favorites linked below.
SWIMSUITS | ADDITIONAL BRANDS
For Love and Lemons has some really fun prints this year. And while some of their styles are more revealing, their collection offers something fun and different to the traditional swimsuit picks.
Made By Dawn was a quick favorite that I discovered a few years ago. I haven’t purchased any of their suits this season, but I like the laid back effortlessness that they bring to beach wear and still wear my suit that I purchased 3 years ago.
Prism: I recently discovered this London-based brand before heading to the Maldives. Their suits are harder to find from major retailers, but they offer a new take on classic silhouettes. (Pictured Second Above)
Kiini: You’ve probably spotted one of these colorful bikinis somewhere on Instagram. They’ve become the trendy suit that caught a lot of people’s attention and come in really fun colors if you’re heading somewhere tropical like Hawaii or the Caribbean. (Pictured First Above)
SWIMSUITS | ONE PIECES
I always throw an active one piece in the mix for summer days that include a more adventurous agenda. I just wore this striped H&M suit for ATV-ing in St. Kitts and linked lots of other options, ready for an active summer schedule. Even if you just want to soak in the sunshine, one pieces have become really popular this year. I LOVE this pink style also from Marysia and just received this For Love and Lemons suit thats blurs the lines of a traditional one-piece, for Mykonos and Santorini.
Once you have your swimsuits covered there’s always the need for coverups. Before the Maldives I purchased this $34 lace kaftan that I’ve been wearing on repeat and lots of others that I’ve linked below. To change things up I threw a pair of coverup pants into this season’s mix. If you have a more active silhouette swimsuit top, they work really well and also work well for riding bikes and in coastal settings.
HATS & ACCESSORIES
Coin Necklaces are a very popular item popping up everywhere since the start of 2018. I wear mine almost every single day – on land/ in the ocean/ paired with daytime and evening jewelry— it’s just the right amount of detailing, especially layered with other Gold pieces. Cuyana’s “Summer Hat” is still my #1 favorite accessory. I just ordered a new one since mine’s been a bit worn in all of my traveling and linked a few other options included this hat I wore in the Maldives. Headbands are another big swimwear accessory popping up in 2018. They look really cute paired with hoop earrings and a messy bun, not to mention are quite practical on super humid summer days.
The “Net Bag” is definitely a major swimwear trend for 2018, but while it’s colorful and playful, its not the most practical, especially if you’re heading to the beach. I picked up a yellow beach bag from Zara to have my turn with the trend, but sturdy straw beach bags are still my #1 pick.
Big bow shoes are one of the top summer items to have. I love this pair that I found from H&M – I wear mine all the time and they also come in yellow! In addition to a trendy shoe, a summer “flip flop” is always a must. I’m still a fan of classic thin Havaianas and also picked up these pool-proof Jack Rodgers right before heading to the Caribbean. I’ll add in closed-toe Soludos for active summer days, a strappy gladiator sandal to wear from day to night, and a platform espadrille to dress things up! They are a bit of a splurge but these Carrie Forbes are still a favorite along with a few other pairs that I’ve also linked below.
SUNSCREEN / BEAUTY
I’m already a “less is more” girl when it comes to makeup but this rule applies even more in the Summertime. I ALWAYS apply 50+ sunscreen on my face (La Mer is a favorite) then add a layer of Laura Mercier’s tinted Moisturizer, even if I’m heading to the beach. Coola is my all-time favorite brand when it comes to sunscreen. I religiously use the sport spray, 50 spf lotion, and white tea face sunscreen and linked a few other favorites if you need to stock up before heading on summer vacation!
